Thought I would go to the MCN exhibition at the Excel centre in London on Friday so wheeled the RS out of the garage and set off for the big smoke. The bike behaved beautifully along the A40/M40 but then, while working my way through central London, the bike cut out at a junction and refused to restart (the engine turned over on the starter motor but would not fire up) till the ignition was cycled off and on again. I travelled another mile and the same thing happened but this time it would not start again and the engine warning light was lit. A call to BMW Recovery resulted in a van coming to collect me and the bike and taking us to BMW Park Lane (which weirdly is in Battersea and not on Park Lane!). Once the bike was at the dealers it of course started perfectly with no warning lights showing. They put the bike on a diagnostic machine but this reported there was no fault in the bike’s data log so there was nothing they could do in the short term. It sounds like a heat related electrical fault to me although that is a guess given the small amount of information I have to work with. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this and if so what was done to fix it? I’m obviously disappointed by what happened but must say that I’m impressed with the service provided by BMW as they collected the bike, provided me with a hire car for 4-days to allow me to get home, and will be re-delivering the bike to me once they have had a proper look at it. All this was provided quickly and courteously, well done BMW.
