This morning, a service rep at my BMW dealer ran a query for my RS's VIN but the side reflector recall was not yet listed. He suggested that I call back in a week or so.

I seems to me that over there your authorities are obsessed with reflectors.

They may be, but we aren't. Most motorcycle owners in the U.S. remove the reflectors, which are typically held on with a couple of small bolts, and no one ever notices - especially the plod, who don't even seem to notice bikes without aftermarket exhaust systems that don't do much when it come to reducing combustion noise or environmental emissions.

The first of the month when I was at the shop for a new battery the service manager told me we had two recall on our bikes, but at that time they did not have the info on the fix.
I told him I planned to ignore both recalls.
If the reflector recall is just sticker I would take those.
Somewhere I saw the GS or GSA would would get a bracket moving the reflectors further back.
If the RS is the same, I don't want that fix.

I plan on visiting my dealer today. Maybe he will give me a couple of free reflectors and I can put them on my little red wagon. :D

I heard the Radio Flyer has it's own reflector recall in the US.

The recall I received indicates that the reflector is blocked by the side panniers. The recall mentions adding reflectors to the panniers not replacing the existing ones. Am I understanding this correctly?

    That's correct.
I just read my letter. All bikes affected by the recall will have reflectors added to the luggage cases.
Because the racks on the GS and GSA block the existing reflectors a bracket with rear side reflectors will be added to the bike.

That's good. I've got a big strip of reflective tape on the cases anyway.

I spoke to my shop's service manager today and he said that they are not being sent nearly enough reflectors by BMWNA to address the potential bikes that are affected - and so far they haven't received any reflectors yet in any case. Most of the bikes that need reflectors are GS models. The current reflectors that are mounted to the license plate holder can't be seen when the aluminum-looking bags are mounted to the factory side case racks. He said that they would deal with the issue during normal service visits and not to worry about the recall. It is just some government bureaucrat being overly anal.

Was by a dealer today and here is the first set of reflector recall installed for the GS bike pannier mounts. Guess GS bags have a similar reflector stuck to lower rear corner of the pannier. No idea on the RS panniers but service advisor said a sticker but he’d not seen any yet. AD0C5333-2FE8-4645-8D2B-D9FAE0799E63.jpeg CA0787ED-33FE-4E05-9DAD-F9528BD48BD8.jpeg

My bags were held from delivery on my RS on September 1. I understand the dealer may be getting closer to releasing them to me, sometime later this November. The dealer must fit the new approved reflective tape to their sides before release. Nicely enough, I was compensated by receiving a free BMW luggage roll for my inconvenience. Nice touch by BMW and my dealer contact, Tiffani.

That new reflector installation on to the bottom of the GS luggage rack mount sure looks like a case of German over-engineering to me. I wonder if it came with an owner's manual written in 10 different languages, with three pages of legal warnings, and included torque specifications for the fastening hardware.

The Kansas City dealer had the GSA kits today but not the RS reflectors.
I'm guessing the RS reflectors will arrive any day now.

I guess that is all right then. I already have reflective stickers on the backs of mine, and if BMW want to add some on the side that are tasteful looking then that is fine by me. I just love my very highly reflective wheel rim stripes - far more effective than any reflectors on the sometimes-on luggage cases.
