Looks like the Pilot Road 5 will be out in a few months.
Since it doesn't have a center tread groove or one that crosses the tire center I'll probably stick with the 4 next year.
As a touring rider I like knowing how much rubber is remaining at the center of a tire.

Good to see they are going to produce these for the big dual sport models with the 19" front rims. Will be interesting to see if they bring the price down to match the Dunlop Roadsmart III tires.

Maybe the lack of sipes in the centre is what improves the grip under braking they claim?

Also, the contact patch when upright is going to be much more than that narrow strip, so the sipes either side will give perfectly adequate wear indication.

I think I would trust Michelin's R&D over some random bloke on the internet :p

I'm not so sure. I had the Metzeler Roadtec 01s on my bike and because I'd done a lot of freeway miles, the only place with any wear was the very center inch or inch and a half. The tire looked really good at a casual glance.

Nope, we had a set of Conti Road Attack 2s that were not down to the center most wear bars and the center of Debbies rear tire started to tear meaning the cords would show in 100 miles or so.

if you look at many tyres like the Pirelli Angel GT, new Avon ST, Conti Road Attack 3 and others. These all have a central strip of solid rubber to give better grip (even on wet roads as the front tyre creates a drier channel). Are you saying all of these tyre makers are wrong? Sipes are for water dispersion. The wear indicators are that, indicators not something to follow religiously. I can't remember the last time I took notice of the wear indicator as there are usually other reasons to change a tyre that I feel through the bars or my arse i.e. the profile has worn to the point where handling is horrible (see other thread where I talk about uneven wear due to road camber).

Interesting to note that the PR5 blurb doesn't crow about longer tread life. This is a first for the PR series. I wonder how long they will last?

These will be released about the time I will need new tires. And just when I was going to ttry the Dunlop Roadsmart IIIs. :)

As Darrell said, I would have to see how their price compares, but I would bet that they are no cheaper than the PR4s so the Roadsmart IIIs should still be cheaper. The only other thing to bring the "specific price" down is if they were to last appreciably longer than the competitors, and as Bob mentioned above, they don't seem to have mentioned that in the Release. To many, including me, that is important.

Maybe an option for the tire after next, when some have had the chance to report on longevity.

If they grip like buggery in the wet and last about 4500 miles I'll be happy.

Mileage, grip, handling, I think they just look better. So that’ll do it for me. Roll on January.

They are all better tyres than the vast majority of us are riders. There's grip, which most of us will get no where near on the road and feel, which is what scares most people in my opinion and experience. Relax and they'll all outperform us.

I will likely mount a set maybe even before the new set of DUNLOP Roadsmart III I have in my tire rack right now. I'd guess there will be some Southern Hemisphere riders or riders in the southern US who might run through a set of them before riding season returns where I am located.
