A couple of us will be coming to Utah in May to find and ride the best roads. We are not "off road riders" so are not looking for the all best dirt roads, but rather paved roads. This does not mean that if there is some really great site or view that is only accessible via dirt road we would necessarily pass it up.

Can any of you recommend your favorite roads, sites to see, places to stay....really special food

    Thanks

Try to hit as many National Parks as you can in the southern part of the state.

Hwy 12 is a popular road. This is the stretch that drops off on both sides.

This is riding through Capital Reef.

This is a dirt road we took in 91 in Capital Reef N.P.
This is not hard to do on a road bike but there were a few loose sand spots. We didn't make it to the end of the canyon because a storm chased us out.

Another dirt road, but I think it's worth taking for the great view.
Moki Dugway in the SE part of the state.

Hwy 31 in the center of the state is a scenic road. If they're moving sheep watch for the horse drawn wagons the herders live in.

Utah is a beautiful state. Have a fun trip.

Not enough expertise to steer you specifically, but here are a couple sites I use to rough out ideas for trips.

There is a mix of Utah trip reports in this link including pavement, gravel and off-road. Some nice reading during a VT Winter.

sport touring net has a bunch too, but you may have to sign up (free) to get into the forums.

Pretty country and so nice to make a loop into the neighboring states if time allows.

    Cheers

Good thread to get started. Thanks. I've got a 22 day ride planned to Utah, southern CO and northern NM and AZ in September.

Last June I was there and the riding and scenery is fantastic southern Utah. Like Lee said, route 12 is fun and a long road too. As your pic shows, there are a lot of tar snakes though. There are big elevation changes and the temp might vary by 40 degrees in a short period. The road in Zion National Park is fantastic, race track smooth and curvy.

    Southern UT
UT12 south out to Torrey, UT
UT24 on the way into Torrey, UT
    UT95 into Hanksville, UT
UT 72 out of Fremont, UT (take this one all the way to interstate 70)
UT 31 out of Hunnington "Hunnington Canyon"
UT 128 from I70 into Moab - beautify road that runs along the river
And not too far from UT on the CO side is one of my favorite roads CO 141 into Gateway, CO. You need to run the entire length.

    Northern UT
UT 89 into Logan from Bear Lake, "Logan Canyon"

All good roads. I have not been on 89 but it looks interesting.
Thanks for mentioning 141 in Co, it's a fun road with good scenery.

Zion is one of our favorite parks.
We spent two days there. Had a motel outside the park and each day would ride in, park the bikes and change out of our riding gear. We would use the shuttle to run us around to different hiking trails.

    These look great!

I high lited all these on my map. I'll have to find a good way to string them all together.
Any special sights? Special places for great food?

    Thanks All

Use caution on UT 72. It is an open range and cattle are present from time to time.
Bryce is not too far south of UT12.
Good food in Moab and at the resort in Gateway.
Gas stations are far and few between. Carry extra fuel and if you run 95 into Hanksville, stop to fill up. Last chance before Torrey.

Below are a few pictures of 141 in western Colorado. We start west of Ridgway Co. and head NW on 145 and 141.
The first time we were on it we spotted remains of the Hanging Flume on the cliffs near Uravan.
The last time in 2014 we were not able to spot it.

It can be hot in this part of the state in summer months. It was 100 Deg F. when we were there in 2014.
The resort at Gateway has a food trailer with shade so we stopped there for water a chance to cool off.

They also have inside dining but we have only been to the trailer.

I think there was a gas station on the north side of Gateway, but I won't swear to that.

Bob if you do not already have one, the National Park Service has a Senior Pass that sells for $10 on site or $20 online. This is a lifetime pass good at all National Parks.
There's talk of this pass going up to $80 latter in the year.

Yep I have one. They are a great deal. Let's hope the Park Service does not jump the price!

I don't turn 62 until November and the date I saw mentioned for the price increase is July.
Maybe there will be enough flak and the price will not go up.
